Correct Application Method of Thermal Grease

Correct application of thermal grease is essential for effective heat dissipation in electronic devices. Follow these steps to ensure optimal performance:


Preparation

Clean the Surface: Before applying thermal grease, ensure that both the heat sink and processor surfaces are clean.


Choose the Application Method

Different types of thermal grease may recommend various application methods. Common techniques include:

a. Dot Coating Method

Steps:

Extrude an Appropriate Amount of Grease: Squeeze a small dot of thermal grease onto the center of the processor. The dot should be about the size of a grain of rice (approximately 1-2 mm in diameter).

Press the Heat Sink: Gently place the heat sink onto the processor and apply even pressure to spread the grease across the contact surface.

Remove Excess Grease: If excess grease overflows, gently wipe it away with a lint-free cloth.

b. Scrape Coating Method

Steps:

Apply Evenly: Use a plastic scraper or a dedicated thermal grease application tool to spread the grease evenly over the surface of the processor.

Press the Heat Sink: Place the heat sink on the processor and apply appropriate pressure to evenly distribute the grease.

Check the Coating: Gently remove the heat sink and check the grease application to ensure complete coverage with no missed areas.


c. X-Shaped Application Method

Steps:

Extrude the Grease: Squeeze a thin line of thermal grease in the center of the processor.

Apply: Use a scraper to spread the grease in an X-shaped pattern, ensuring that the entire contact surface is covered.

Press the Heat Sink: Place the heat sink on the processor and apply even pressure to distribute the grease across the contact surface.


Install the Heat Sink

Ensure Even Pressure: Position the heat sink or cooler evenly on the processor, making sure all fixing points are pressed evenly.


Check and Clean

Check: After installation, inspect the distribution of the grease to ensure there are no bubbles or uneven areas.

Clean: Remove any excess grease, especially around the edges.


Avoid Overdosage

Pay Attention to the Amount: Apply an appropriate amount of thermal grease. Too much grease can hinder heat dissipation and potentially cause short circuits, while too little can result in poor contact and inefficient heat transfer.
